5 Reasons Why Your Heat Pump Keeps Tripping a Breaker

5 Reasons Why Your Heat Pump Keeps Tripping a Breaker

Your heat pump is a valuable piece of equipment. But what happens when it starts to malfunction? Remember to look for the signs! One of those signs is a tripped breaker. Here are five reasons why your McDonough, GA, heat pump may be tripping a breaker.

1. Improper Wiring

Wire connections expand and contract due to the heat and cold, which can cause them to loosen over time. This can disrupt the electrical current running through the wires, causing your heat pump to trip a breaker. A faulty installation is one of the most common reasons for this to occur.

2. Overheating

If your heat pump is overheating, it will cause the breaker to trip to prevent further damage to the system. The reason may be a dirty air filter or coils. It could also be a sign of a refrigerant leak.

3. Short Cycling

Short cycling occurs when your heat pump turns on and off more frequently than it should. This puts a lot of stress on the system, which can cause it to overheat and trip the breaker. Short cycling may result from a poorly calibrated thermostat.

4. Faulty Capacitor

Your heat pump has a capacitor that helps start the compressor. If this part is faulty, it can result in a tripped breaker. Check the wiring inside and ensure all the connections are tight and secure.

5. Compressor Malfunction

When the compressor gets old, it starts to develop rust on the inside. As the rust builds up, it will eventually cause the compressor to fail and potentially lead to a tripped breaker.
